It has to be Now

Last week, a bus ran over a school boy in the wee hours of the morning, snuffing out a young life barely a few summers old. He was cycling to school for football practise.
As usual this has led to a debate of building cycle tracks in the city.
Here are a few observations: A cycle does not need to be registered with the RTO nor does the cyclist need a license. In fact, I am not sure there is a minimum age for a person to be cycling on the road.
The city does ‘boast’ a few tracks but what is their state? The one on Canal road is built through several trees. While we laud the conservation attempts, it can be most inconvenient to cycle around them a la slalom skiers! And that’s if one can save themselves from the overhanging branches.
Some are used by the irrepressible two wheeler drivers as they try to get ahead come what may, even going in the wrong direction. Thelavalas too set up shop here or simply park their vehicles for a siesta.
So where does that leave cyclists? In all other road lanes of course.

Everyone wants to travel safely on roads but wants someone else to do something about it.
Worse, many end up jeering the one person who waits for the red signal to turn green, practically honking him/her into deafness.

All of us who use roads, whether on wheels or walking have to respect and follow certain rules. Yes, pedestrians too use roads irresponsibly and need to relearn basics taught at school. We need to take pride in following rules. Traffic discipline has to come from within.

Hope some awakening occurs sooner rather than later…..

Dont Forget Her!

Its 8th of March again. I don’t know who started this business of Women’s Day or when, but it surely is a big business proposition today. Card shops go berserk with special cards, beauty parlours and obesity clinics offer special packages, apparel, car sales, the list is endless and more innovative each year.
We all forget the one important lady who takes care of our home chores so that we can go out to work, enjoy these ‘special‘ days and be there with a cup of tea or glass of water when we return. That’s our domestic help of course. She may not even get a chance to read this blog or any other such forum, yet we must not forget that she too deserves something special today.
My views on this subject have been published at 4IW. Click here to read on.

Don’t forget her!
Happy Woman’s Day All!

Wanted: A Plant Hotel

Most of us have a collection of plants in our city flats. They thrive despite the pollution in the city and bring great joy and beauty to our lives. No true plant lover will complain of having to manage nutrients, pruning, correct light conditions or watering however busy the schedule.

The biggest problem arises when the entire family goes out on a vacation. Nuclear family units mean the house is empty and there may be no one who can be entrusted the job of caring for the plants. By and large this period lasts up to 15 days and can be very traumatic for the plants. Servants cannot always be relied upon to water correctly nor is it advisable to leave house keys with them. Very few have the luxury of friends and family chipping in to do the needful.

I would like to share some of my plant vacation ideas with all of you. I carry out what I call ‘plant training’ prior to my departure. Essentially it means acclimatizing the plant to going without water. Depending on the duration of my stay away I begin by watering the plant on alternate days progressively increasing to every third, fourth, fifth day etc. By the time I leave the plant is used to surviving without water for up to 10 days. Of course the season plays a very important part.

To reduce the trauma, I shift the pots indoors, which also cuts evaporation. In case of plants, which require lots of water, I immerse them in a tub half filled with water. To prevent the roots from rotting, I usually place the pot + tub in the balcony. In hotter months, the soil in the pot can be covered with gunnysack soaked in water or wet paper.

Avoid fertilizing the plants just prior to departure. Make sure you do spray some pesticides though. Avoid adding to your collection just prior to a planned vacation. Mud pots remain wet for a long time hence providing valuable moisture to the plants.

Make sure to water your babies the moment you return but do not immediately place in bright sunshine. Move gradually from semi shade to usual spot.

Don’t be worried if the plant loses leaves- most plants revive soon. Of course this method works best with established and healthy plants. It generally takes me about 10 days to get back to my routine but on my last holiday, my fern, asparagus, arelia, serisa, Erica palm etc had all got new shoots in the period, recovering faster than me!

Naturally some activists may protest about my training but it’s better than keeping the pots in the compound/yard – open for vandalizing (broken stems and pots) or even stealing (yes , healthy well grown pots too are stolen!). For stays of over 15 days this technique is not an ideal one.

I read of a pet hotel in Delhi meant for pets when the owners were out. With so many plant lovers, a reliable place to house plants for up to 15 days is a necessity in Pune. There are plant libraries and nurseries but I was unable to locate a plant hotel. Takers anyone?

Copy Cats

Visit any xerox tapri in Pune for a single copy and its a long wait. Usually run in a tiny area with barely enough space to hold the machines they do roaring business all day long and often till late into the night. And what is it that the machines are spitting out furiously? Endless copies of notebooks (notes religiously made by one sincere student that will cater to the entire class) and text books. While so much is written about plagiarism and piracy, one finds students prefer to photo copy a book often costing upwards of 1K instead of buying it. At 30 paise a page the conscience easily loses this battle.

Their justification.. whats the point in spending so much for one book for one term which is of no use later? With newer editions coming out, there are no takers for old ones.
Does it justify copying text books? What is the way out?

Most shops on Pune’s ABC (Appa Balwant Chowk- the ultimate destination for text books for all disciplines), offer fresh books on ‘library’ basis, meaning the student buys the book at full cost and uses it for a year. He can return it before the specified date for a refund of a percentage of the cost (40-60%). Returning is optional but one has to choose that when making the initial purchase and get the requisite stamp and preserve the receipt.

Copy Cats may seem ‘cool’ but surely but surely preparing ones own notes is a better alternative? I must check with my younger friends ..

Power Naps

An afternoon nap or adequate night sleep itself is a priceless luxury for those in the fast lane. In many cases a short afternoon sleep or power nap can have beneficial effects. Everyone has different indications for the body crying out for a pause and we must learn recognize those. These symptoms range between drooping eyes/ moodiness/ lethargy/ difficulty in decision making or communicating etc.

The power nap works best if you are able to comfortably lie down in a quiet place. Generally a maximum of 30 minutes of sleep works best to recharge your mind and body. Longer sleep takes us into deeper sleep stages and this could lead to sleeplessness at night. It’s a good idea to set the alarm even for a 20-minute nap to avoid such problems.

This does not take away the importance of adequate sleep at night. Some experts opine that if a person gets adequate night sleep then he/she should not feel tired during the day. Others recommend the power nap as a simple mid day relaxation technique for both mind and body.

Either way there is no reason for not grabbing 40 winks as long as your work efficiency remains high. Listen and understand your body and choose what works best for you. The idea is to work hard and do your best but not at the cost of damaging your body!

A Sore Thumb

The past few days have been miserable, the extremely painful reason being a sore thumb.
Here I am a simple Marathi lady trying to put down my thoughts and generally be useful to society. How much attention did I really give all my fingers earlier? I tried simply eliminating the thumb from my actions but grip, pinch and every other hand function was impossible. Compensating with other joints complicated things even further.
Society is something like our hand. Every group and strata has its own strengths and weaknesses like our five fingers. All have to function harmoniously for any effective action. Each one however apparantly small or insignificant cannot be done away with.
Dont take my word for it. Think for yourself. Look around. We are Indians and have a social and national responsibility to live harmoniously and work for India’s progress.

14 February – A Different View

14th February is the ‘The Congenital Heart Defect Awareness’ Day.

India has seen huge progress in treatment for babies born with some anamolies in the structure of their hearts. Some are minor (hole in the heart) but some can be very severe and life threatening. Earlier, those who could afford went abroad for treatment. Things gradually improved and in the eighties diagnostic equipment and surgery was possible in few metros.

Soon highly qualified surgeons who had trained abroad began to return and work here. Improvements in infrastructure went in tandem and now we have specialised paediatric cardiologist and paediatric cardiac surgeons in smaller towns as well. Neonatal diagnosis by various imaging techniques is also possible.

Late Dr Nitu Mandke was a pioneer in paediatric cardiac surgery in Mumbai and a great human being. He is no more but his legacy lives on via the hundreds of hearts he has mended.

Work in this field steams ahead as India now has babies coming in from abroad for their treatment. This 14th February, spend some time to read something different. Papers always carry appeals for aid for congential heart surgery. If you do not wish to contribute any Vitamin M, then spend some time volunteering. Bring a Smile.

Combatting Cough

hWe are seeing unpreceedented cold weather across India. Pune is known for a huge variation in day-night temperatures and the difference can at times be up to three times.

Thus, cough and cold are almost continuous companions, in both children and adults.

I am reposting an earlier nuska – ideal for dry nagging cough.
This formula has been handed down my family.
Obviously it is not a substitute for a visit to a doctor or medications.
: )

Those allergic to any ingredients, please use discretion.

Roast 10 whole cloves on a gas flame using tongs.
Similarly roast 10 whole cardamoms.
When cool, pound the two together to a fine powder.
Mix in about 4 tsp of honey. Honey made from ‘jambhool‘ is most effective, else any variety will do.
The sweet n spicy potion is ready!
Store in a tightly closed jar.
Consume 1/8 tsp at a time, three times a day.

Ciao!

Stress myths busted!

Suddenly there is a whole new culprit for diseases these days – Stress. It is seen not only in adults but pages and pages get written about how kids and adolescents too get affected.

Commonly it is understood to be some kind of worry or burden (social or financial) that has to be solved. So what is stress? Stress cannot be quantified. Yet it has actually been closely involved with human evolution as our ancestors fought wild animals or scrambled to acquire food. Our body reacts to any challenge with the primitive fright-fight-flight syndrome. All of us have experienced such body reactions.

Just think how you feel as you run to catch a bus or train, or are chased by a wild dog? The heart beats very fast, we become breathless, muscles become tense and we begin to sweat profusely. The body releases a substance called adrenalin in the blood. This causes the changes mentioned earlier so that our body can deal with the situation in this case, run away from the dog or get on to the bus.

Over a period of few minutes, the heart and breathing calms down and we gradually relax. The body reaction was designed to deal the external situation or achieve a goal. Hence the changes were helpful. Once the stressor is removed, body is supposed to become normal.

Modern day stressors however are different. They involve long working hours, an angry boss, uncooperative colleagues, personal conflicts at home, overwork etc. However in any knowledge intensive profession, an individual is never really away from work as thought processes continue. Our body reacts to these factors (stress) in the only way it knows how- by releasing adrenaline in the blood stream. This causes the same changes we noted above. As long as stress remains, the body continuously remains in a heightened state. This means muscles remain tense; blood sugar remains high, heart functions at a faster rate. Our performance improves to some extent due to these changes but problems begin when the body does not revert to its normal equilibrium. Diabetes, high blood pressure, persistent neck and back pain, ulcers etc. are the new lifestyle diseases arising from such uncontrolled and unabated stress.

Having said that it is important to note that stress cannot be totally done away with. What we can do is learn to manage the effects of stress. This means try to consciously relax and undo the physical changes that are caused by adrenalin release. Our mind has a deep control over our body. Controlling our mind and thoughts can go a long way in managing stress.
Meditation is an excellent tool for this. Choose any form of meditation that appeals to you and can do in the time available to you. This will ensure regularity in practice. Studies have shown that brain activity decreases while meditating and right brain activity increases which is good for us. As one relaxes he/she can feel the breathing slow down, heart rate fall and the muscles relax.

Some form of stress busters must be included in our daily routine. Listening to music and exercise are also excellent for stress relief. Exercises can be of any form (yoga, walking, swimming, sports or gym exercises).

However incorporating this routine will not show overnight results. Give it some time, make healthy lifestyle changes, put your goals into perspective and take charge of your life!

There is no reason to fear stress, make it work for you!

The Golden Bird

Vibhas Pande has some startling insights on the latest power:
http://www.readingstockcharts.blogspot.com/

We are a wealthy nation! ‘Soneki chidiya aa gayi hai!'( The golden birdie has arrived). The overwhelming response to Reliance Power IPO substantiates this fact. Let me put this in the proper perspective.

This IPO was for approx US $ 3 billion. It has been oversubscribed 67 times. That means approximately US $ 200 billion have moved towards this IPO. This is a huge amount. The retail portion was supposed to be 30% (US $ 1 billion). That has been oversubscribed 16 times. So retail investors like you and me have put in US $ 16 billion for this IPO.Let us first compare this US $ 200 billion number with other numbers.India’s foreign exchange reserves are US$ 265 billion. And here there are US $ 200 billion for a single IPO.

The FII inflows for the entire year 2007 have not exceeded US $ 20 billion. This IPO has generated 10 times more that amount.George W Bush has announced a ‘growth package’ for the revival of American economy yesterday. That package is US$ 150 billion. Much lower than this amount generated here.

What does this mean for the future?

The money from the retail investors after refunds is not going to go back to the FDs and PPFs. It will soon be back in to the stock markets applying for quality stocks. The over subscription from HNI and QIB will also find its way back into the stock markets looking out for quality stocks.
Who are eyeing this money?

Many Indian and Foreign funds, promoters, banks, governments are going to look at this opportunity to tap this wealth. There are going to be many issues of quality stocks in the primary markets. There would also be promoters of dubious records trying to cash in on this wealth.

So what should we do?

We should just hold on to our stocks, mutual funds, land banks, gold, commodities, what have you. Move into quality assets and be patient. This flood of money is likely to raise asset prices to much higher levels. We can do some accumulation of good stocks in the meanwhile. Stocks that are ripe for unlocking value. Some names that come to my mind are Reliance Industries, HDFC,ICICI Bank, Larsen and Toubro. There are many more. GOI will also come out with some follow on offers of PSUs. The opportunity is huge.Hopefully our regulators and educators keep a check on the issues coming into the markets. Investor education and proper guidance remains the primary need of the hour. India and its retail investor have arrived on the scene.
